This exploration (2024 - on-going) delves into the complex relationship between alcohol consumption, masculinity, and violence, examining how alcohol can reinforce gender stereotypes, male dominance, obsession, and aggression, as Vietnam currently ranks second among Southeast Asian countries and third in Asia for average alcohol consumption per person.
I was 23 when this memory burned into my mind. My chosen brother, once full of hope, sat alone in a dark attic with only a flickering light. I listened to him muttering angrily, feeling both sadness and regret. Next to him was a large glass of alcohol. Each drink numbed his pain but also made his words harsher. His sadness turned into anger, and his love grew distant.
Those moments are what led me to turn my attention to these photographs. In Vietnam, alcohol is deeply tied to social gatherings and ideas of manhood, but the cost is high.
